PERSONAL RECOVERY STORY

At 44, I Realized Sitting Was Becoming My Biggest Daily Activity

A six-week personal story about hip discomfort, long workdays, and rebuilding movement into an otherwise sedentary routine.

A quiet reminder to make room for movement throughout the day.

My workday was built around a chair

Meeting. Laptop. Email. Another meeting.

By the end of the day, my hips felt stiff, and getting up from the chair had become something I noticed. I wasn't inactive because I didn't care to move. My routine simply made inactivity easy.

I decided to change the environment before blaming my body.

My plan included:

  • Professional assessment when appropriate
  • More frequent standing and walking breaks
  • Gentle mobility
  • Progressive strengthening
  • Adjusting my workstation
  • Recovery practices, including red light therapy as an optional part of a broader wellness routine

Red light therapy is an optional addition—not a replacement for professional assessment or a gradual movement routine.

WEEKS 1–2

I set reminders to stand up regularly. At first, even a short walk felt like a reset. But I gradually realized how many hours I'd sat down without changing position.

WEEKS 3–4

I added basic strengthening exercises. I also started taking short walks after busy days. The goal wasn't burning calories—it was making movement part of my day.

WEEKS 5–6

Movement started happening naturally. I walked while taking calls, stood during some meetings, and kept the routine manageable enough to repeat.

Small, repeatable movement can be part of an ordinary day.

What made the biggest difference

  • Break up long periods of sitting
  • Make short movement breaks convenient
  • Use recovery habits consistently
  • Don't ignore persistent symptoms

My biggest realization

I didn't need to completely redesign my life. I needed to stop making sitting the default.
