PERSONAL RECOVERY STORY

At 43, I Had to Stop Being a Weekend Warrior

A six-week personal journey from barely moving during the week to building a more balanced activity routine.

Building a more balanced routine can start with small changes during the week.

My weekly routine made no sense.

Monday through Friday: mostly sitting.
Saturday: another long workout.
Sunday: recovery—or sometimes another active day.

I thought I was being active. But my body didn't seem to agree.

After several weeks of recurring soreness and discomfort, I realized the problem might not be that I wasn't doing enough. It was that I tried to do everything at once.

I needed consistency more than intensity.

My approach included:

  • Professional assessment when appropriate
  • More movement during weekdays
  • Reduced weekend training volume initially
  • Progressive strengthening
  • Better recovery habits
  • Red light therapy as an optional adjunct

Red light therapy is an adjunct—not a replacement for professional assessment or a gradual movement routine.

WEEKS 1–2

I started by adding short walks during the week. Nothing intense. No dramatic goals. Just consistent movement. I also learned to consider how I felt after training.

WEEKS 3–4

I gradually introduced more structured strength work. The focus was consistency rather than soreness.

WEEKS 5–6

My activity became more distributed across the week. I wasn't saving all my movement for Saturday anymore. That alone made the routine feel much more sustainable.

Regular movement throughout the week became part of my routine.

The rules I kept

  • Avoid huge spikes in activity
  • Move regularly throughout the week
  • Strengthen progressively
  • Allow recovery between harder sessions
  • Don't use pain as a test of toughness
  • Seek professional guidance when needed

I didn't need more motivation.

I needed a better distribution of movement.
