I’ve never been one to sit still. Exercise isn’t just a hobby for me – it’s part of the job. But recovery? That’s the part I have to force myself to take seriously, whether I like it or not. Active or passive, rest is non-negotiable.

Lately, I’ve been testing all sorts of massage guns and alternative recovery tools, trying to make the dull process of recovery feel a bit more exciting. That’s how I got my hands on the Wondear red light therapy blanket – the same gear that top footballers use to speed up recovery and improve sleep.

Fulham F.C. have already made Wondear a core part of their players’ recovery routine, and that alone made me feel like I had to put it to the test. Described as “a cosy sleeping bag,” the blanket was irresistible on a rainy June day.

So, does it actually work? I’ve just found my answer. Here are three reasons why I’m completely hooked.

It’s not a cheap health investment, but this red light blanket really does deliver – it helps you relax and fall asleep. You can split it into two separate mats, zip them together into a sleeping-bag format, and it comes with an eye mask and a remote control for adjusting the settings.

The red light blanket delivers high-power red light across your whole body, primarily to relax muscles, reduce inflammation, improve sleep and skin appearance, speed up sports recovery, and boost energy levels. Wondear makes it clear that this is not an infrared blanket – infrared ones focus more on heating the body.

The product uses lab-grade red light therapy and consists of two pads. You can use them for two people at once, or zip them together into a camping-sleeping-bag-style setup – though this version is far more high-tech. It’s packed with high-power red light LEDs designed to penetrate the body and promote repair.

On the specs: the brand uses 660nm red light and 850nm near-infrared light. According to Wondear, “these two wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are the most thoroughly researched and therapeutically effective bands.”

At $1,999, it’s no small sum – but given the build quality and the red light sessions it provides, every dollar feels well spent. Each purchase comes with a user manual, adapter, goggles, controller, and power cable. The controller lets you adjust light intensity and timer settings, and there’s also a pulse mode for deeper light penetration.

I couldn’t help but look into the research behind red light therapy. Existing evidence does show solid support for skin regeneration, collagen production, and improved skin texture.

A 2025 meta-analysis published in Sports Health reviewed 14 randomised controlled trials focusing on red light therapy in high-level football and volleyball players, looking at muscle strength and recovery markers. The studies covered different populations and training phases, trying to clarify red light’s actual effect on athletic performance.

I haven’t been using it long, but I’ve already found three reasons I can’t stop. First, falling asleep has never been easier. About twenty minutes inside this glowing sleeping bag, and that restless feeling in my body just fades away. Second, muscle stiffness the next morning is noticeably lighter – especially after intense training. And third, my skin feels smoother, a change that started showing after about a week of consistent use.

I’ve tried plenty of recovery methods – from cold-water immersion to electric foam rollers – and few tools have ever made recovery feel like something I actually look forward to. No effort required: just lie down, set the timer, and let the body switch into repair mode.

Of course, it’s not magic. The price is steep, and red light therapy can produce different results for different people. But if you treat recovery as part of your training – just like Premier League players do – this blanket packs lab-grade red light tech into a foldable sleeping bag, and it truly delivers a different kind of experience.

Curled up inside the red light glow with the rain pattering outside – it felt like wrapping myself in a warm science experiment. I guess that’s why it’s so addictive.
